On February 10th, as part of the CIGUAADAPT project, an enriching work session was held on the implementation of marine toxin analysis and confirmation methods, focusing on fish matrices and the optimization of management protocols. The event brought together experts in the analysis and study of marine toxins, as well as laboratory technical staff and students, who had the opportunity to share their expertise and concerns.
The session featured brief but insightful presentations, covering topics ranging from ciguatoxin extraction in different fish matrices—highlighting the variety of extraction protocols and their challenges—to ciguatoxin detection methods based on cell models, antibodies, and receptors, among others. Additionally, analytical chemistry methods were discussed, which require a high level of complexity and specialization, such as liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
After gaining an updated perspective on the topic, a discussion space was opened to exchange ideas and debate. One of the key points of discussion was the difficulty in obtaining reference materials, a challenge that significantly impacts the study of ciguatera.
As a result of this session, a joint document will be prepared with recommendations for stakeholders in the field.
