Adaptation of the ciguatera in Spain and improvement of its management

The project

The project sets the following General objectives:

Evaluation of the expansion of ciguatera in Spain and influence of environmental conditions and climate change.

Characterization of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates physiology and multifactorial design of ciguatoxin production.

Determination of CTXs profiles and CTX bioaccumulation in fish in the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean).
Improvement of monitoring tools for the prevention and management of ciguatera.

The team

A close collaboration

The project is based on a close collaboration already established between three groups: IRTA, IEO-CSIC and EURLMB. The groups comprise consolidated researchers with recognized experience in the areas of the marine environment, microalgae and algal toxins; their geographical location and complementary skills assure the feasibility and success of the multi-disciplinary work needed.
