Our project’s principal investigator, Dr. Maria Rambla Alegre, moderated this enriching session, which included the participation of researchers from various institutions, as well as technical and support staff. This diversity allowed the topic to be approached from multiple perspectives.

The program featured a series of up-to-date and highly interesting presentations delivered by experts in the field, covering various tools and techniques for studying microalgae in field samples. Among them, notable highlights included metabarcoding, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and the use of artificial substrates, among others.

The session also included a discussion space, where all proposals and perspectives were welcomed. One of the key points of debate was the feasibility and/or necessity of implementing a microalgae monitoring program, with a particular focus on those linked to ciguatera, such as species from the Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa genera.

Following this session, a joint document will be prepared with recommendations for stakeholders and fisheries.

On January 27th, we had the pleasure of organizing a working group as part of the CIGUAADAPT project, with the goal of discussing and sharing ideas about the challenges involved in studying microalgae from field samples.
