The study covered islands located in the northern Catalan coast, such as Ma\u00e7a d\u2019Oros, Massina, and the Medes Islands, as well as more southern areas like Tabarca Island, Grossa Island, and the Hormigas Islands, not forgetting the Columbretes Islands. In each location, samples were collected both on the island and at a nearby coastal point.<\/p>\n<p>This project was a challenge for the technical and research staff of IRTA in La R\u00e0pita, who approached it with enthusiasm, as these were the first surveys of this kind in the area aimed at assessing a possible risk of ciguatera.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign, macrophyte samples were collected to analyze the presence of benthic microalgae that produce ciguatoxins. One of the main objectives of this study is the isolation and identification, both morphological and molecular, of dinoflagellates of the <em>Gambierdiscus<\/em> genus, as their presence is associated with a higher risk of ciguatera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During October and November 2024, sampling campaigns were carried out on several peripheral islands near the Iberian Peninsula.
